THE GRESHAM ARTISAN GOLF CLUB celebrated its Centenary in 2008.
The Artisan Golf Club was inspired by Mr G C E Leveson Gower in 1908. It was established as a means of allowing villagers from Limpsfield and its surrounds [mainly workers on the Titsey estate] to play the great game.
Other golf clubs were doing the same thing and in 1920, the Artisan Golfers Association was formed in London, at which G.A.G.C. was represented.
The A.G.A continues to flourish, despite 'do-gooders' over the years attempting to dismiss the whole concept of Artisan Golf as anachronistic and class-divisive - and the Gresham has a match-fixture list other member-clubs would die for, including Royal Cinque Ports and Walton Heath, and not forgetting their 'special relationship' with Tandridge GC.
In 1947 it was suggested that the old caddy shed be made available to the Gresham members as a clubhouse, and the present facility is cosy and atmospheric to rival the main club.
The Gresham administers its own club and membership, paying a fee per member to LCGC. This has risen a little from the original 10/- in 1954, but they still get very good value for money in exchange for a small amount of annual and project work on the course.
For details of membership availability and conditions, please contact the Secretary/Manager who will be pleased to put you in touch with the relevant persons in G.A.G.C
