But it is a gem. Despite being on fairly-level heathland, the tight, tree-lined fairways and small greens make it a course which is rarely tamed - and playing the final few holes with a good card in your hand can be a true test of nerve as there is always something lying in wait to trap the unwary!

One of the prime features of the club is the clubhouse itself, first opened in 1896, and essentially unchanged apart from a few additions, ever since. It is cosy and atmospheric, and with all the competition boards dating back over many years, speaks ‘Golf’ loud and clear.
